PhD research investment helps increase wind turbine efficiency
By supporting two PhD research studentships through the Durham Energy Institute (DEI), DONG Energy is continuing its long-standing relationship with Durham University. DONG Energy has funded the Chair in Renewable Energy position at DEI and endowed three MSc scholarships for Durham University students each year since 2011. DONG Energy will now support two PhDs as well, which will focus on the operation of wind turbines and helping to predict technical faults before they happen.

Blades en route to Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm
The first ever wind turbine blades manufactured at the Siemens blade factory in Hull are en route to Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm, located off the North Norfolk coast. The Siemens blade factory in Hull officially opened in December 2016 and the first blades to have been manufactured at the site are now ready for installation at Race Bank. The blades have been loaded onto the Sea Installer vessel, and will make their way from the Port of Hull to the Race Bank site for installation.

DONG Energy announces 'Skills Fund' for coastal areas

DONG Energy has announced their plans for a new £75,000 Skills Fund. This forms part of the company’s £465,000 East Coast Community Fund annual commitment announced earlier in December last year. £55,000 will be available through an open application process to experienced organisations that can develop and deliver Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) related training or education courses, a one-off event, or a programme of targeted events.

A change is in the air for offshore wind turbines
A new offshore windfarm capable of meeting the electricity demand of well over 230,000 homes, Burbo Bank Extension, was officially opened at a ceremony in Liverpool on 17th May. The wind farm is a joint venture between DONG Energy (50%) and its partners PKA (25%) and KIRKBI A/S, parent company of the LEGO Group (25%). It is the first offshore wind farm in the world to make commercial use of the MHI Vestas V164-8.0 MW wind turbines.

GMS UK wins contract for world’s biggest wind farm
In order to provide offshore accommodation for workers on what will be the world’s biggest offshore wind farm, DONG Energy has chosen Gulf Marine Services UK, based in Aberdeen. Hornsea Project One will be capable of meeting the electricity needs of well over one million homes. It will be located 120km off the Yorkshire coast, so when work begins offshore in 2018, the team will stay out at sea rather than make the journey back and forth each day.

200 jobs safeguarded in Teesside thanks to DONG Energy
DONG Energy has signed a contract with Bladt Industries for 96 transition pieces for its Hornsea Project One offshore windfarm. Over 50 transition pieces (56), which link the monopile foundation of offshore wind turbines with the towers, will be manufactured at the Offshore Structures Britain (OSB) facility in Haverton Hill near Billingham, Teesside. The remaining transition pieces (40) will be manufactured at the Bladt Aalborg facility in Denmark.
