Twisting tap brings water to life
A creative project from a product design student at London's Royal College of Art is making waves as it combines energy efficiency with modern-day 3D art. The design, which won an iF design concept award in 2014, features two turbines which rotate as the water passes through, creating a twisting, flowing lattice effect.
A tap that sends out patterned water jets may sound wasteful, but there is an important reason behind the project. Design student Simin Qiu recognised the importance of conserving water, and came up with a tap that is not only aesthetically satisfying, but also saves water and energy.
According to Qiu, the addition of the rotating parts allows 15% of water to be saved compared with a traditional faucet. Furthermore, the temperature has been set in advance to avoid unnecessary use of electric heater switches, which helps to save energy. Users can flick between three settings that all give different pretty patterns of water, pictured below.
