Thermoelectric generation converts waste heat into electricity
GMZ Energy has announced the successful demonstration of its 1,000W diesel ThermoElectric Generator (TEG) which directly converts waste heat into usable electricity to increase fuel efficiency. This announcement follows GMZ’s June 2014 demonstration of its 200W diesel TEG and marks the next milestone in a $1.5m vehicle efficiency programme, sponsored by TARDEC and administered by the U.S. Department of Energy.
With battlefield fuel costs ranging from $40 to $800 per gallon, the U.S. military is especially interested in cost-saving thermoelectric technologies and will soon begin testing GMZ’s 1,000W TEG in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle.
During GMZ’s initial lab demonstration, the 1,000W TEG, which exceeded several of the TARDEC programme’s specifications, ran continuously for five hours with no failure or degradation in performance.
GMZ’s TEG can also be integrated into passenger vehicles, enable self-powered boilers, and much more.
