A series of hybrid ENergY storage capacitors, with low 2.5mm profiles that feature an energy density of 13Ws/g, has been released by Vishay Intertechnology. Available with a wide variety of layouts, capacitance values and voltage ratings, the 196 HVC ENYCAP series offers designers enhanced flexibility, charge and discharge performance for energy harvesting and power line backup applications.

The series of capacitors enters the market with up to six cells and capacitance values from 4 to 90F, with stacked through-hole, surface-mount flat and lay flat configurations featuring pins, tabs, and connectors. Voltage ratings range from 1.4 up to 8.4V. Its unique technology does not require cell balancing and provides soft charging characteristics less than 1A and low leakage current from 0.03 to 0.24A IL 24h.

The 196 HVC ENYCAP series is claimed to provide the best energy/volume rating in the industry. The capacitors are especially suited for applications such as embedded computers, utility meters, POS terminals, servers, data storage systems, professional remote controls, real-time clocks, emergency lighting, access systems and surveillance cameras, gaming and vending machines and network equipment. The devices offer a useful life of 1,000 hours at +85°C.

For technical evaluation Vishay provides a complete solution, featuring the LTC3355 from Linear Technology, demonstrating a complete 20V 1A Buck DC/DC and Backup Regulator with Integrated ENYCAP Charger, charge current monitor, integrated timer and deep discharge load switch protection.

Evaluation boards, samples and production quantities of the 196 HVC ENYCAP series are available now, with lead times of up to 14 weeks for larger quantities.
