Designed for AC filtering in power converters, UPS systems, solar and wind inverters and motor drives, a series of medium power film capacitors has been introduced by AVX. The FLA series capacitors exhibit high-reliability, single-phase performance and feature self-healing technology and an internal overpressure disconnector device.

Exhibiting high overvoltage capabilities as a result of their self-healing properties, the FLA series is available in A– I case sizes, voltages of 250–690VAC, 10 to 600µF capacitance values and capacitance tolerances of ±5 or ±10%.

Comprised of metallised polypropylene dielectric imbued with a soft PU resin, the capacitors exhibit high ripple current and extremely high dielectric strength in operating temperatures of -40 to +80°C. The series is encased in a cylindrical aluminium can with fast-on or screw terminals

Unlike aluminium electrolytic capacitors, FLA series capacitors do not have a catastrophic failure mode, as film capacitors simply experience a parametric loss of capacitance of approximately 5%. This negates the risk of short-circuiting, as well as enabling continued functionality.

Gilles Terzulli, Worldwide Marketing Manager, Power Film Capacitors, AVX, comments: “The FLA Series film capacitors were specifically designed with self-healing properties and an internal overpressure disconnector to provide our customers in the various power conversion markets with a high-reliability, long-lasting component ideal for AC filtering.”

The RoHS-compliant series lasts for 100,000 hours at rated voltage and 70°C. Lead time for the series is approximately eight weeks.
