Solar cell achieves high front side conversion efficiency
At SiliconPV 2019, research and innovation hub, imec, announced that its n-PERT (Passivated Emitter and Rear Totally diffused) solar cells developed with Jolywood, have reached a certified front-side conversion efficiency of 23.2%. With cost-efficient processing and a clear path to higher efficiencies, this makes these n-PERT cells a serious contender to p-PERC technology.

Paving the Way for Flexible Solar Cells

At the EU PVSEC conference, imec presented a thin-film tandem solar cell consisting of a top perovskite cell developed by imec within the partnerships of EnergyVille and Solliance, and a bottom CIGS cell from the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research. The tandem cell resulting from this collaboration achieves a record efficiency of 24.6 percent.

Large-area nPERT solar cells surpass 23% efficiency
At the EU PVSEC conference, imec, research and innovation hub in nanoelectronics, energy and digital technology and partner in EnergyVille, announced that its latest generation of large-area monofacial screen-printed rear-emitter nPERT cells feature a conversion efficiency of 23.03%, certified by Fraunhofer ISE CalLab.

Imec beats silicon PV with 27.1% perovskite-silicon tandem
Imec has announced a record result for its 4-terminal Perovskite/silicon tandem photovoltaic cell. With a power conversion efficiency of 27.1%, the imec tandem cell beats the most efficient standalone silicon solar cell. Further careful engineering of the Perovskite material will bring efficiencies over 30% in reach. Perovskite microcrystals are a promising material system to make high-performance thin-film solar cells.

Screen-printing process for efficient n-PERT solar cells
Imec, within the partnership of EnergyVille, has announced that it has realised highly efficient n-PERT (Passivated Emitter and Rear Totally diffused) solar cells using an industry-compatible screen-printing process. Together with Jolywood, imec developed industry-compatible bifacial cells with an average front-side conversion efficiency of 21.9%. Based on this process, imec also demonstrated screen-printed monofacial n-PERT cells with a conversion efficiency up to 22.8%.

PV module achieves 29.3% power conversion efficiency
Research and innovation hub in nanoelectronics, energy and digital technology, and partner in Solliance and EnergyVille, imec, has announced an improvement of its 4cm2 perovskite/silicon tandem photovoltaic module achieving a power conversion efficiency of 23.9%. Reaching this level, imec is the first to achieve a module-on-cell stack that outperforms the standalone silicon solar cell.

Perovskite PV modules achieve 12.4% power conversion efficiency
Imec and partner Solliance have announced that they have improved their 4x4cm2 perovskite module, achieving a certified conversion efficiency of 12.4%, which it claims to be amongst the highest for this size of perovskite modules. The module efficiency was measured under long-term Maximum Power Point (MPP) tracking. At Solliance, this perovskite technology is developed with industrially-applicable processes and with a view towards a rapid market introduction of this promising source of renewable energy.

Testing the reliability of Ni-Cu-Ag plated solar modules

imec (partner in EnergyVille) and BE Semiconductor Industries N.V. (Besi) announced that they have demonstrated long-term reliability in five full size 60-cells Nickel/Copper/Silver (Ni/Cu/Ag) plated solar cell modules, confirming the industrial value of this metallisation technology. The modules consist of 60 front side laser ablated and Ni-Cu-Ag plated p-type Cz-Si cells. The plating was performed with Meco’s Direct Plating Line, an industrial plating tool, followed by annealing in an inline belt furnace.

ERC Starting Grant to revolutionise thin-film solar cells
Imec and Hasselt University announce that one of their scientists has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant. The grantee is Bart Vermang, researcher at IMOMEC, imec’s associated lab at the Hasselt University. He receives two million euros to apply techniques from silicon solar cell processing to revolutionize the design of thin-film solar cells, improving their efficiency, cost and stability.

Novel bifacial cell tech to enhance energy yield of PV modules
The nano-electronics research centre and partner in Energyville, Imec, will present at this week’s Intersolar Europe/EU PVSEC a bifacial n-PERT (BiPERT) solar cell featuring a bifaciality value close to 100%. With a rear cell efficiency close to the efficiency measured from the front of the cell, the new solar cell underscores the ability to strongly enhance the energy yield of photovoltaic (PV) modules made with this type of cell.

World's first semi-transparent perovskite PV modules
imec and its Solliance partners, have presented the first-ever semi-transparent perovskite PV-module, achieving power conversion efficiencies up to 12%. The technology enables for semi-transparent PV-windows which are a key towards Zero-Energy Buildings. Moreover, combining these semitransparent perovskite modules with Si solar cells, an unprecedented 20.2% in power conversion efficiency for a perovskite/Si stacked solar module was achieved.

A disruptive technology for the solar industry
A specialist in direct wafer growing technologies for the next generation of solar photovoltaic products, Crystal Solar, and Imec have achieved a 22.5% cell efficiency (certified by FhG ISE CalLab) with nPERT silicon (Si) solar cells manufactured on six inch mono-crystalline epitaxially grown kerfless wafers, which will help to pave the way toward industrialisation of this promising technology.

At this week’s SiliconPV conference, imec and Besi have announced that they have demonstrated long term reliability of their 60 cells Ni/Cu/Ag plated solar module, passing 600 thermal cycles, three times the IEC61215 specification, with only minimal power loss of one percent.

Imec extends collaboration with Total on next gen silicon solar cells
Nanoelectronics research centre imec and global energy company Total, announced that they have extended their collaboration to significantly increase the energy output of PV panels. Imec’s industrial affiliation programme (IIAP) on next-gen crystalline silicon solar cells is a multi-partner R&D programme concentrating on further increasing the conversion efficiency of silicon solar cells and modules, while at the same time reducing industrial manufacturing cost.

imec and Kaneka Corporation have announced that they have signed a three year framework agreement that strengthens and extends their comprehensive R&D collaboration. Next to working on next gen solar cells, under this frame agreement imec and Kaneka will explore new applications in life science and thin-film electronics.

PV module features an 11.9% active area efficiency

PV module features an 11.9% active area efficiency
At ITF US, nano-electronics research centre imec announced a record 11.3% aperture and 11.9% active area efficiency for its thin-film perovskite PV module. The efficiency was measured over an aperture area of 16cm2. This achievement is the best conversion efficiency for perovskite modules in literature.
