Iran and Middle East could adopt fully renewable electricity systems

Iran can transition to a fully renewable electricity system and financially benefit from it by 2030. Researchers at Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) show that major oil-producing countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region could turn their abundant renewable energy resources into lucrative business opportunities in less than two decades.

High-purity metals recovered from battery waste

Researchers at Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) have succeeded in recovering important metals – lithium, cobalt and nickel – from battery waste with nearly 100% purity. Recovered metals will be needed increasingly in the manufacture of batteries, and in the future especially in batteries of electric vehicles. Researchers have been able to extract cobalt at 99.6 percent purity, nickel at 99.7% purity, and lithium at 99.9% purity from battery waste.
