Smart food-labelling project to reduce food waste in 2020

Printed sensors project aims to reduce cost of EV batteries

CPI has announced that it is involved in a collaborative project which aims to develop novel printed sensors for electric vehicle (EV) battery current density imaging. This could increase battery life, reduce charging times and help to improve consumer safety, confidence and uptake of EVs.

Project to accelerate commercialisation of lightweight nanomaterials

CPI is contributing its facilities and capabilities to a Horizon 2020 project focused on creating an open-innovation test bed for the development and production of lightweight nanomaterials and embedded electronics. The ‘LEE-BED’ project will run for four years with a consortium funding value of over €10 million.

Smart vest asthma treatment for children

It has been announced that CPI is working alongside ItoM Medical BV and Blumorpho to support the development of a wearable medical device focused upon improving treatment for children with uncontrolled asthma. The device, a next generation smart vest prototype, will benefit from CPI’s expertise in the printable electronics sector.

Project to develop next generation skin and oral cancer therapy

CPI is collaborating on a photonics project to advance the development of next generation cancer treatment using phototherapeutic methods. The project, a collaboration between CPI and North East-based company, LightOx, is focused on light-based treatments to target removal of skin and oral cancer cells. CPI is supporting LightOx to develop a range of molecular tools for use in imaging, therapeutics and assay development.

Project to develop next-generation of batteries and sensors

CPI is part of a project focused on next generation battery and sensor work. Operating alongside partners on the BatterySense programme, CPI is supporting work to reduce the size of existing wireless sensing form factors by exploiting additive manufacture. This allows for the intimate integration of batteries into the substrates of ultrathin label-like sensors fabricated by roll-to-roll processes.

Printable electronics centre helps objects to communicate

CPI has welcomed new resident clients to its new facility, just months after opening. The printable electronics centre, based at Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, has welcomed Silent Sensors, Datatecnics Corporation and HP1 as tenants, along with Wootzano and PST Sensors at its original site on NETPark, in Sedgefield, also County Durham.

New facility encourages more opportunities in IoT

The start of a new project that will address manufacturing challenges and exploit the commercial opportunities offered to industry by the ‘internet of things’ (IoT), a market predicted to be worth an estimated $253bn by 2021 has been announced by CPI. The European Regional Development Fund has announced £2.6m of funding for CPI to establish and run a new national technology centre in County Durham.
