Wind and solar power could meet 80% of U.S. electricity demand
The United States could reliably meet about 80% of its electricity demand with solar and wind power generation, according to scientists at the University of California, Irvine; the California Institute of Technology; and the Carnegie Institution for Science. However, meeting 100% of electricity demand with only solar and wind energy would require storing several weeks’ worth of electricity to compensate for the natural variability of these two resources, the researchers said.

The latest way to recycle plastic waste into fuel

A way of recycling millions of tons of plastic garbage into liquid fuel has been devised by researchers from the UC Irvine and the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC) in China. "Synthetic plastics are a fundamental part of modern life, but our use of them in large volume has created serious environmental problems," said UCI chemist Zhibin Guan. "Our goal through this research was to address the issue of plastic pollution as well as achieving a beneficial outcome of creating a new source of liquid fuel."
