Researchers at Purdue University, Indiana, have shown how to convert waste packing peanuts into high-performance carbon electrodes for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that outperform conventional graphite electrodes, representing an environmentally friendly approach to waste disposal.

Boilers enable 'virtually energy-neutral' sewage works
Slibverwerking Noord-Brabant (SNB), Moerdijk, Holland, has officially commenced operations using two boilers, provided by NEM Energy, and a Siemens steam turbine, immediately making the largest sewage sludge incineration plant in Europe virtually energy-neutral - a status unique in the industry. The amount of electricity generated will be enough to power 7,000 to 8,000 households.

A creative project from a product design student at London's Royal College of Art is making waves as it combines energy efficiency with modern-day 3D art. The design, which won an iF design concept award in 2014, features two turbines which rotate as the water passes through, creating a twisting, flowing lattice effect.

450kW gas cogenerator achieves 81.5% overall efficiency

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Toho Gas have jointly developed a 450kW gas cogeneration system, to be launched into the Japanese market on 1st April. The gas cogeneration system, which is based on a previously introduced 380kW system, achieves a power output of 450kW, made possible primarily through optimisation of combustion and the adoption of efficient components.

Recent IDTechEx conference presentations and webinars on the research carried out for the IDTechEx report, titled Electric Buses 2015-2025, attracted many questions. They reveal a general perception that things are moving much more slowly than is actually the case, with the exception of a few aspects such as use of fuel cells and continuous charging, both of which are failing to progress at the intended speed.

Qseven module targets smart meter market
DFI is offering a Qseven module, the BT700, based on Intel’s Atom E3800 microprocessor aimed at smart metering applications and designed specifically to meet the performance/wattage requirements of intelligent systems. Using the low-watt processor is a cost-effective way of reducing power usage. Data collected from the meter is sent to the communication system via LAN or UART.

RF Energy Alliance unveiled at European Microwave Week

NXP Semiconductor is amongst a group of companies that have come together to form the RF Energy Alliance announced at European Microwave Week. Joining NXP in the launch are EGO Elektro-Gerätebau, Huber+Suhner, ITW, Rogers Corporation and Whirlpool R&D (an affiliate company of Whirlpool Corporation).
