Optocouplers' safety isolation suits solar inverters

Expanding its VOW Widebody family of high-isolation optocouplers, Vishay has announced a series of devices which achieve 1 and 10MBd data rates. The VOW135, VOW136, VOW137 and VOW2611 optocouplers consist of a GaAIAs infrared emitting diode, optically coupled with an integrated photo detector.

The optocouplers are designed to isolate low- to high-voltage circuits and increase reliability in alternative energy systems such as solar inverters and industrial applications such as motion and motor control and welding equipment. Offering an external creepage distance of greater than 10mm, the VOW Widebody family provides a maximum transient overvoltage pulse value of 8000V and a maximum working isolation voltage of 1414V.

An internal Faraday shield provides very high input-to-output noise isolation required by high-power switching applications. Designers can meet domestic and international safety agency requirements at a low cost and with a small form factor, eliminating the need for expensive conformal-coated solutions.

The VOW135 and VOW136 optocouplers feature common mode transient immunity of 1000V/μs and high- and low-level propagation delay of less than 2µs with a data rate of 1MBd. Keeping high- and low-level propagation delay at less than 100ns, the VOW137 and VOW2611 offer boost common mode transient immunity up to 40000V/μs and high pulse width distortion less than 40ns at a 10MBd data rate.

Compliant to RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, the VOW Widebody family optocouplers conform to Vishay "Green" standards and are certified to UL, cUL, VDE and CQC 5000m reinforced insulation requirements.

The optocouplers are supplied in DIP-8 0.4" Widebody through-hole and surface-mount lead-bend packages. The VOW135, VOW136, VOW137 and VOW2611 are available now for sampling and in production quantities, with lead times of six to eight weeks.
