Full-SiC-module suits PV inverters, UPS & charging systems
Higher efficiency, increased power density, smaller footprints and reduced system costs: these are the main advantages of transistors based on SiC. Infineon Technologies is starting volume production for the Easy 1B, the first full-SiC module announced during PCIM 2016. At PCIM 2017, the company showcased additional module platforms and topologies for the 1200V CoolSiC MOSFET family. Infineon is now able to bring the potential of SiC technology to a new level.

Further enhancing IGBT performance, Infineon Technologies has announced the S5 (S for soft) family based on the ultra-thin wafer TRENCHSTOP 5 IGBT. This family has been developed specifically for AC/DC energy conversion in industrial applications switching up to 40kHz, typically to be found in PV inverters or UPS.

The 700V offering enables designers of high-voltage power stages to simplify their design while making them more robust.

IGBTs' low switching frequencies suit PV inverters
Optimised for 50Hz to 20kHz switching frequencies typically found in PV and welding inverters, Infineon announces a new class of low saturation voltage (V CE(sat)) IGBTs. The L5 family is based on the TRENCHSTOP 5 thin wafer technology with an optimised carrier profile further reducing the intrinsically low conduction losses.

German researchers cut energy losses in half
New semiconductor materials could mean 50% less energy loss in switched-mode power supplies for PCs, flat-screen televisions, servers and telecommunications systems and could make solar inverters even more compact and cost-efficient. The partner companies of the research project “NeuLand” have developed highly-integrated components and electronic circuits which made it possible to reduce energy loss in circuits by 35% as early as during tests in ongoing research activities.
