Back in Autumn 2016 Oriam opened and is home to the governing bodies of Scottish football and rugby union, as well as a host of other sports including volleyball, squash and basketball. Building services engineers Max Fordham collaborated with Reiach and Hall Architects to design the centre, which has since been described by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon as ‘absolutely awe inspiring’ and ‘the jewel in the crown of Scotland’s sports facilities.’

But this early plastic also sparked a revolution in the way people thought about manufacturing: What if we weren’t limited to the materials nature had to offer? Over a century later, plastics are an abundant part of daily life. But these plastics are often derived from petroleum, contributing to reliance on fossil fuels and driving harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

A clean way of producing fossil fuel technology
Engineers at The Ohio State University are developing technologies that have the potential to economically convert fossil fuels and biomass into useful products including electricity without emitting carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. In the first of two papers published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science, the engineers report that they’ve devised a process that transforms shale gas into products such as methanol and gasoline—all while consuming carbon dioxide.

Glowing plants could be the electrical lighting of the future
Imagine that instead of switching on a lamp when it gets dark, you could read by the light of a glowing plant on your desk. MIT engineers have taken a critical first step toward making that vision a reality. By embedding specialised nanoparticles into the leaves of a watercress plant, they induced the plants to give off dim light for nearly four hours. They believe that, with further optimisation, such plants will one day be bright enough to illuminate a workspace.

Piezoelectric tiles light the way for Space Center
Technology that could be used in self-powered smart cities of the future will soon be demonstrated at the NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Visitor Complex at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Ilan Stern, a senior research scientist with the Georgia Tech Research Institute, and colleagues, are collaborating on a $2 million project supported by NASA contractor Delaware North Corporation to build a 40,000-square-foot lighted outdoor footpath demonstrating applications of piezoelectricity for renewable energy.

A new catalyst created by U of T Engineering researchers brings them one step closer to artificial photosynthesis - a system that, just like plants, would use renewable energy to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into stored chemical energy. By both capturing carbon emissions and storing energy from solar or wind power, the invention provides a one-two punch in the fight against climate change.

Alison Sweeney of the University of Pennsylvania has been studying giant clams since she was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara. These large mollusks, which anchor themselves to coral reefs in the tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific oceans, can grow to up to three-feet long and weigh hundreds of pounds. But their size isn't the only thing that makes them unique.

LED lighting brand, Goodlight, has announced that Hi-Speed Services, an independent transport and logistics company in Surrey has refurbished its offices and warehouse with high performance, energy efficient LED lighting improving the ambience, saving costs and reducing environmental impact. Hi-Speed are committed to lowering its carbon footprint and already provide a green courier service, using vehicles that emit less carbon and save on fuel.
